When you are too unwell to work or study, the last thing you need is a fight for paperwork. Book a bulk billed appointment, in person or by phone, and leave with a certificate that day.

An assessment, then a certificate.
A certificate is a doctor's professional opinion about your capacity, which is why it follows a consultation.
A medical certificate states that, in the doctor's opinion, you are unfit for work or study for a period of time. It is a legal document that your employer or institution can rely on, and issuing one requires the doctor to have actually assessed you.
Why certificates are not backdated
A doctor can only certify what they have assessed. If you were unwell on Monday and see us on Thursday, the doctor can certify Thursday onward and may note that you reported being unwell earlier, but cannot certify the earlier days as fact. Book on the day you are unwell wherever possible.
Good to know
Telehealth counts. If getting out of the house is the problem, a bulk billed phone appointment with an eligible patient can produce a certificate the same day.

Types we can issue
Certificates of unfitness for work or study, carer's certificates when you are caring for an unwell family member, certificates for return to work with restrictions, and supporting letters for university special consideration. Certificates for Centrelink, insurance and some workplace schemes use their own forms, which we can complete in a longer appointment.

What the certificate will and will not say
It will state the dates you are unfit and that you were assessed. It will not automatically include your diagnosis. Your medical information is yours, and most employers are not entitled to it. If a specific form requires more detail, you choose whether to consent to that being shared.

Longer absences
Certificates for extended leave, WorkCover and income protection need a longer appointment and often a written report. Please tell reception when you book so enough time is allowed.

The appointment is bulk billed for patients with a valid Medicare card. There is no separate charge for the certificate itself.

Standard GP consultations at Toongabbie Doctors are bulk billed for patients with a valid Medicare card, so there is no out-of-pocket cost to see your doctor.
Standard certificates are included in the bulk billed consultation for eligible patients.
Detailed forms, insurance reports and WorkCover paperwork attract a private fee, quoted before it is completed.
Certificates cannot be issued without an assessment, and cannot be backdated to days before you were seen.

A doctor can only certify what they assessed. We can note that you reported being unwell earlier, but the certified period generally starts from the day you are seen.
Yes, for eligible patients who have had a face-to-face appointment with us in the previous twelve months. The telehealth appointment is bulk billed.
Not unless you agree to it. A standard certificate states that you were assessed and are unfit for the dates given, without the clinical detail.
Yes. Your child needs to be assessed, and we can issue both a certificate for them and a carer's certificate for you.
Not for the standard certificate that comes out of a bulk billed appointment. Longer forms and insurance reports carry a fee, always quoted in advance.
