The test is easy. The interpretation matters.
A request form is a question your doctor is asking about your body. The answer needs context.
Pathology is how most internal problems are found. Your GP writes a request specifying which tests are needed, you attend the collection centre, and the results return electronically to the doctor who ordered them, usually within one to three working days.
Where to go
4Cyte Pathology operates in the same centre at Toongabbie Point, so you can walk from your appointment straight to collection. Most routine blood tests do not need an appointment. Their opening hours are posted at the collection room and reception can confirm them.
Good to know
Take the request form with you, or make sure it has been sent electronically. Collection staff cannot take blood without a valid request.

Fasting
Some tests — cholesterol, fasting glucose and a few others — need you to fast, usually for eight to twelve hours. Water is allowed and encouraged. Take your regular medicines unless your doctor has told you otherwise. Morning appointments make fasting far easier.

Common tests and what they measure
A full blood count looks at red cells, white cells and platelets, picking up anaemia and infection. Iron studies, thyroid function, kidney and liver function, HbA1c for average blood sugar over three months, vitamin D, and lipids for cardiovascular risk are all routine. Urine, swab and stool samples are collected the same way.

What happens to the result
Every result returns to the ordering GP and is reviewed. If action is needed, we contact you. Urgent results are phoned through. Please book a follow-up appointment if your doctor asked you to, even if you have not heard anything.

Standard GP consultations at Toongabbie Doctors are bulk billed for patients with a valid Medicare card, so there is no out-of-pocket cost to see your doctor.
Most GP-requested pathology is bulk billed for patients with a valid Medicare card.
A small number of tests are not covered by Medicare; your GP will tell you before ordering if a fee applies.
Tests requested for employment, insurance or visa purposes are not Medicare-rebated and carry a private fee.

Not for most routine tests. 4Cyte in our centre takes walk-ins during opening hours. A few specialised tests need booking, and your GP will say so.
Usually eight to twelve hours where fasting is required, water permitted. Take your usual medicines unless told otherwise, and book a morning collection to make it easier.
Most routine blood tests come back within one to three working days. Cultures, biopsies and specialised tests take one to two weeks.
Your GP reviews every result. We contact you if something needs action, and you should still attend any follow-up your doctor recommended.
Yes. Ask at your appointment and we can print them or send them securely. They also appear in My Health Record where that is enabled.
