Vaccines need time to work and some courses run over weeks. Book a travel consultation six to eight weeks before you fly and you will leave with everything organised rather than rushed.

Travel advice is specific to the country, the season, the itinerary and you — not a standard list.
A travel health consultation looks at your destinations, how long you will be away, what you will be doing, where you will be staying, and your own medical history and vaccination record. Two people going to the same country can need quite different preparation.
Some vaccines require multiple doses weeks apart, and most need time to generate immunity before you travel. Six to eight weeks ahead is ideal. If you are leaving sooner, still come in — there is almost always something useful that can be done, even at short notice.
Many travel vaccines are not on the National Immunisation Program, so the vaccine itself carries a cost. Reception can give you an indication when you book.
Hepatitis A and B, typhoid, tetanus and diphtheria boosters, measles-mumps-rubella if your immunity is uncertain, influenza, rabies for remote or animal-contact travel, Japanese encephalitis for parts of Asia, cholera for some destinations, and yellow fever, which requires an accredited centre and an international certificate.
Malaria risk varies within a country, not just between countries. Your GP will check current advice for your specific itinerary and prescribe preventive medicine where it is needed. Bite avoidance — repellent, covered clothing, treated nets — protects against dengue and other illnesses that no tablet prevents.
Traveller's diarrhoea standby treatment, advice on food and water, altitude sickness prevention, motion sickness, blood clot prevention on long flights, a letter for carrying prescription medicines through customs, and a copy of your vaccination record.
