Family planning covers preventing pregnancy, preparing for one, and everything in between. Our GPs will run through the full range of methods, including the ones that are less commonly offered, and help you weigh effectiveness against side effects, cost and how much you want to think about it day to day.
Contraception options
The combined pill and the progestogen-only pill, the contraceptive implant, hormonal and copper intrauterine devices, the injection, the vaginal ring, condoms, and permanent methods. Long-acting reversible contraception — the implant and IUDs — is the most effective group and is worth understanding even if you have not considered it before.
Good to know
Effectiveness varies enormously in real life. The implant and IUDs are more than 99 per cent effective because there is nothing to remember; the pill is around 93 per cent effective as typically used.

Emergency contraception
The emergency contraceptive pill works best the sooner it is taken and can be used up to five days after unprotected sex, with declining effectiveness. A copper IUD inserted within five days is the most effective emergency option and provides ongoing contraception. Book a same-day appointment or speak to Good Price Pharmacy Warehouse in our centre.

Planning a pregnancy
Pre-conception care improves outcomes. That means folic acid and iodine before conception, checking immunity to rubella, chickenpox and whooping cough, reviewing medicines that are not safe in pregnancy, a cervical screening test if due, and discussing weight, alcohol, smoking and any chronic conditions.

Confidentiality
What you discuss stays between you and your doctor. Patients aged fourteen and over can be seen alone and can consent to their own care where the doctor is satisfied they understand the decision.
