A script or referral is a medical decision. Your GP checks it is still right for you, which is why these are provided during an appointment rather than over the counter.

Repeat prescriptions

Regular medicines need regular review. When you book for a repeat prescription your GP checks your dose, any side effects and whether monitoring such as blood tests is due. Electronic prescriptions can be sent to your phone as an SMS or email token and filled at Good Price Pharmacy Warehouse downstairs at Toongabbie Point or any pharmacy you choose.

Referrals to specialists and imaging

If you need to see a specialist, have a scan or start allied health care, your GP writes a referral that includes your history, medicines and relevant results so the next clinician has what they need. We can refer to public hospital clinics, including Westmead, or to private specialists, and help you understand the options and likely costs.

Medical certificates

Certificates for work, study or caring responsibilities are provided during a consultation when your doctor considers it clinically appropriate. Certificates cannot be backdated, so please book on the day you are unwell, or use telehealth if you cannot come in.

Good to know

Bring a photo of your medicine boxes to your appointment. It is the quickest way for your GP to check names and doses.

Care plan reviews

If you have a chronic condition management plan, regular reviews keep it current and maintain your access to Medicare-subsidised allied health visits. Reviews are bulk billed and can often be combined with a routine appointment.

Scripts, referrals and certificates are provided within a bulk billed consultation for Medicare card holders, so there is no separate charge.

Standard GP consultations at Toongabbie Doctors are bulk billed for patients with a valid Medicare card, so there is no out-of-pocket cost to see your doctor.

Patients without a Medicare card pay a private consultation fee.
Some forms, such as insurance or Centrelink paperwork, may take longer and require a long appointment.
Telehealth appointments are bulk billed for eligible patients seen in the last twelve months.

Common questions about scripts, referrals and certificates.

Prescriptions are provided during an appointment so your GP can check the medicine is still right for you. Eligible patients can use a short telehealth appointment for straightforward repeats.

Your GP sends a token to your phone by SMS or email. Show it at any pharmacy, including Good Price Pharmacy Warehouse at Toongabbie Point, and they dispense your medicine. Repeats are stored electronically.

Yes, for Medicare rebates to apply. Your GP writes the referral and can suggest suitable public or private specialists.

No. Certificates are issued for the period your doctor assesses you as unfit, from the date of your appointment. If you cannot attend in person, book a telehealth appointment on the day.

GP referrals to a specialist are usually valid for twelve months from your first specialist visit. Referrals for ongoing conditions can be written for longer where appropriate.
