Wound care that keeps healing on track.

Wounds heal best when someone is watching them. Our practice nurses manage dressings, reviews and stitch removal in a dedicated treatment room, with a GP a few steps away.

Three ways to book: HotDoc · online · or by phone.

Wound and Dressing Care at Toongabbie Doctors

The unglamorous work that matters.

Most wound problems are prevented by the right dressing changed at the right interval.

Wound care at a general practice covers everything from a dressing after a minor procedure to the long-term management of a leg ulcer. Our practice nurses run regular dressing appointments, and a GP reviews the wound whenever the healing trajectory changes.

Wounds we manage

Post-procedural wounds after biopsies and excisions, cuts and lacerations, burns and scalds once the acute stage is over, skin tears, surgical wounds after hospital discharge, leg and venous ulcers, pressure areas, and diabetic foot wounds, which need particular care.

Good to know

Any wound on the foot of someone with diabetes should be seen promptly. Reduced sensation means a small wound can become serious without ever hurting.

1 of 4

Signs a wound is infected

Increasing pain after the first two days, spreading redness, warmth, swelling, discharge that is thick or smells, or a fever. If you notice any of these, book the same day rather than waiting for your next dressing appointment.

2 of 4

Dressings and intervals

There is no single right dressing. The choice depends on how wet or dry the wound is, whether there is dead tissue, the risk of infection and where it sits on the body. Your nurse will explain what is being used and how often it needs changing, and will give you what you need to manage between visits where appropriate.

Stitch and staple removal

We remove stitches and staples placed here or at a hospital. Bring the discharge summary if the procedure was done elsewhere so we know the intended removal date.

Wound care we provide.

Nurse-led appointments with GP review when the wound needs it.

What to expect.

How ongoing wound care works here.

01
First assessment

The wound is measured, photographed with your consent, and a dressing plan set with your nurse and GP.

02
Regular dressing appointments

Booked at the interval the wound needs, usually every two to seven days, with the same nursing team where possible.

03
Review and adjust

If healing slows or the wound looks infected, a GP reviews it the same day and the plan changes.

04
Discharge

Once the wound is closed and stable, you are given advice on scar care and what to watch for.

Common questions.

Questions about dressings and healing.

It depends on the wound. Most are reviewed every two to seven days. Your nurse will book the next appointment each time rather than leave it to you to guess.

Usually yes with a waterproof dressing, but not always. Your nurse will tell you what is safe for your specific wound and dressing type.

Increasing pain after day two, spreading redness, warmth, thick or smelly discharge, or a fever. Any of those means book the same day.

Yes. Bring your discharge summary so we know what was used and when the surgeon intended them to come out.

Urgent. Book the same day. Reduced sensation means a serious wound may not hurt, and early treatment prevents most complications.
