Confirming your pregnancy
Book as soon as you have a positive test. Your GP confirms the pregnancy, works out your due date, orders early blood tests and an ultrasound, starts you on the right supplements and talks through your options for pregnancy care, including public hospital care, shared care and private obstetric care.

Antenatal shared care
With shared care, routine antenatal visits are with your GP at Toongabbie Doctors and you attend the hospital for booking-in, key scans and the later stages of pregnancy. It suits many women because visits are local, quicker to arrange and with a doctor who already knows your history. Your GP monitors blood pressure, growth and wellbeing, arranges screening tests and vaccinations, and liaises with your hospital.
Good to know
Whooping cough and influenza vaccines are recommended in every pregnancy and are free under the National Immunisation Program. RSV vaccination in pregnancy is also available; ask your GP.

Common concerns in pregnancy
Nausea, reflux, back and pelvic pain, iron levels, gestational diabetes screening, mental health and sleep. Our physiotherapists can help with pregnancy-related back and pelvic pain, and our dietitian with nutrition and gestational diabetes.

After your baby arrives
Postnatal checks for you at six weeks, including mood, bleeding, contraception and recovery, and the six-week check for your baby. We continue your baby's immunisations and development checks and support you with feeding, sleep and adjusting to life with a newborn.

Standard GP consultations at Toongabbie Doctors are bulk billed for patients with a valid Medicare card, so there is no out-of-pocket cost to see your doctor.
Hospital antenatal care in the public system is covered by Medicare. Private obstetric care attracts fees set by the obstetrician.
Vaccines recommended in pregnancy are free under the National Immunisation Program for eligible patients.
Ultrasound and blood tests are bulk billed at providers that bulk bill; your GP can advise.

An arrangement where your GP provides most routine pregnancy visits and your hospital provides booking-in, key scans, later pregnancy care and the birth. Your GP and hospital share your records.
Most of our patients attend Westmead Hospital or Blacktown Hospital depending on where they live. Your GP will refer you to your local public maternity service or a private obstetrician if you prefer.

Yes. We do the six-week baby check, all scheduled immunisations and development checks, and see babies who are unwell, with same-day appointments held for children.
