A different kind of appointment.
These assessments answer someone else's question about your health, which changes how they work.
A private medical assessment is requested by a third party — an employer, an insurer, a licensing body or an immigration authority — rather than arising from your own health concern. Because the request comes from outside, Medicare does not rebate it, and a private fee applies.
What that means for you
The doctor is still your doctor and still acts in your interest, but the assessment has a defined scope set by the form. You control what is disclosed: nothing leaves this practice without your written consent, and you are entitled to see what is being sent.
Good to know
Bring the form. Almost every delay in these appointments comes from paperwork arriving after the patient does. If the form is emailed to you, forward it to us beforehand.

Common assessments
Pre-employment medicals, commercial and heavy vehicle driver assessments, working with children and aged care clearances, insurance and income protection examinations, fitness-for-duty reviews, and some visa-related examinations. Certain visa medicals must be done by a panel physician, and we will tell you if that applies.

Time and cost
These appointments run longer than a standard consultation because of the examination and the paperwork. Reception will quote the fee when you book, based on the form and the time required, so there are no surprises at the desk.

Things found along the way
Occasionally an assessment picks up something unrelated, such as high blood pressure or sugar. If that happens your GP will tell you and you can book a separate bulk billed appointment to deal with it properly.

Standard GP consultations at Toongabbie Doctors are bulk billed for patients with a valid Medicare card, so there is no out-of-pocket cost to see your doctor.
Fees vary with the form and the time required; reception quotes them in advance, never afterwards.
Some employers and insurers pay the fee directly. Check with them and tell us when you book.
Anything unrelated found during the assessment can be followed up in a separate bulk billed appointment.

Medicare rebates apply to clinically necessary care for your own health. Assessments requested by a third party fall outside that, so a private fee applies.
It depends on the form and the time needed. Reception will quote you before booking so you can decide with the number in front of you.
Longer than a standard consultation, typically thirty to forty-five minutes depending on the assessment and whether tests are required.
Only the body that requested it, and only with your written consent. You can ask to see exactly what is being sent.
