Two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by age 70. A regular skin check finds changes early. Dr Mustafa Hafiz focuses on skin cancer checks, biopsies and excisions, performed in our dedicated treatment room at Toongabbie Point.

A full skin check takes about fifteen minutes. If anything needs a closer look or removal, it can usually be done here.
Skin cancer checks
Your GP examines your skin from head to toe using a dermatoscope, a hand-held magnifier with polarised light that shows the structure of moles and spots beneath the surface. Anything suspicious is photographed and either monitored, biopsied or removed. Dr Hafiz completed additional training in skin cancer medicine and minor surgery in regional Australia, where skin cancer is common. Dr Shirazi and Dr Hossain both hold a Diploma in Dermatology.

Biopsies and excisions
If a lesion needs testing or removing, it is done under local anaesthetic in our treatment room. Small lesions are removed in a single visit; larger ones may need a second appointment. Samples are sent to pathology from the clinic and your GP explains the result and any further treatment, including referral to a plastic surgeon or dermatologist where appropriate.

Check your own skin every three months. See your GP about any spot that is new, changing, bleeding or does not heal.

Other minor procedures
Cryotherapy (liquid nitrogen) for warts, sunspots and other benign lesions, removal of cysts and skin tags, ingrown toenail treatment, wound care and suturing of simple cuts, suture removal and dressings with our practice nurses, and ear syringing.

Skin conditions
Acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, rashes, fungal infections and hair loss are assessed and treated by our GPs, with Dr Shirazi and Dr Hossain holding a Diploma in Dermatology. Cosmetic skin consultations are available; cosmetic procedures are not covered by Medicare.

Skin checks and Medicare-listed procedures are bulk billed for Medicare card holders. Some procedures use consumables that attract a small fee, explained before you go ahead.

Some procedures use dressings or consumables that attract a small fee; your doctor tells you before proceeding.
Pathology on excised lesions is bulk billed by the laboratory.
Cosmetic procedures and consultations are not covered by Medicare and are private.

Common questions about skin checks.
Most adults benefit from a check every twelve months, more often if you have had skin cancer before, have many moles, fair skin or a family history. Your GP will recommend an interval for you.
No. It is a visual examination with a hand-held dermatoscope. If a biopsy is needed, a local anaesthetic injection stings briefly and then the area is numb.
Often, yes, if time allows and the spot is straightforward. Larger lesions or those in sensitive areas may be booked for a separate procedure appointment.
Any cut through the skin leaves a mark. Your GP places incisions to minimise scarring and explains wound care. Most scars fade considerably over twelve months.
Your GP explains the result, arranges any further excision needed and refers you to a specialist where appropriate. Finding melanoma early gives the widest range of treatment options.
